The Shoes I Wear Instead of Heels & Why My Feet Feel Better

I’ve been wearing heels most of my life.
Like every girl does. Or at least, every girl who wants to feel a little more than human.
I’m already 5’9”, but when I wear heels… something else happens. People look. They admire. They comment. The power in being tall, elegant, and unapologetically visible.
But somewhere between admiration and reality, my feet started to complain. Aching arches, stiff toes, pressure at the front, that burning feeling after a long day. The discomfort you ignore because… fashion.
Then, I moved to North Dakota, and suddenly, my heels went into hibernation. But, my feet discomfort stayed.
Snow, ice, boots, layers, winter that lasts half your life.
By the time spring arrived, my feet felt… weak. Almost offended by the real ground.
That’s when I watched a documentary that quietly changed how I see everything.
Her name is María Lorena Ramírez.
She’s an indigenous runner from Mexico, from the Rarámuri (Tarahumara) community — people famous for their endurance and long-distance running.
In 2017, she won a 50km ultramarathon. She beat professional athletes. Sponsored runners. People with the best shoes, the best gear, and the best technology.
