Minneapolis City Guide | Top Things to Do, Eat, Shop & Explore
Spontaneous Road Trips
We recently spent a weekend in Minneapolis, one of those spontaneous road trips that turned unforgettable.
Whether it’s a last-minute adventure or a carefully planned city escape, this vibrant Midwestern gem truly surprised me with its perfect blend of food, culture, style, and nature.
From next-level meals to wandering indie boutiques and strolling along serene lakes. We found many reasons to fall for Minneapolis. Here’s what we ate, where we wandered, and all the places we’d love to visit again.
🍽️ Where to Eat in Minneapolis
1. Spoon and Stable
Located in the North Loop, this James Beard-nominated restaurant offers refined American cuisine with French influence. It’s perfect for a romantic night out or a celebration dinner.
2. Revival
If you’re craving comfort food, Revival’s Southern-fried chicken and mac & cheese will hit the spot. Their brunch is also legendary.
3. Martina
Modern Argentinian with seafood flair. The ambiance is upscale but cozy—ideal for a memorable evening meal.
4. Hola Arepa
Tropical, bold, and affordable—this spot serves up Venezuelan-style arepas and cocktails in a colorful, fun setting. A local favorite!
5. Aster Café
For brunch or a low-key dinner with river views and live music, Aster Café on St. Anthony Main is a must.
🛍️ Where to Shop in Minneapolis
1. Minnehaha Mile
This hidden gem is perfect for vintage lovers. You’ll find antiques, books, records, and retro treasures across several quirky shops.
2. Mall of America (Bloomington)
Yes, it’s a tourist spot, but the sheer scale and variety are worth experiencing at least once. Plus, it’s tax-free on clothes in Minnesota! I love it because we can find anything we want. From the most exclusive to nice restaurants, entertainment, an indoor theme park, an Aquarium, and the list goes on. You will never get tired of the Mall of America. Usually, we spend an entire day there.
🛏️ Where to Stay in Minneapolis
Radisson Blu Mall of America
It’s modern and connected to the Mall of America. You can wander the shops in your comfiest shoes, then head back to your room without stepping outside.
The design is sleek and Scandinavian-inspired, with plenty of cozy touches. Bonus: the on-site restaurant, Firelake Grill House, offers delicious meals and a super romantic vibe.
JW Marriott Minneapolis Mall of America
A luxurious spot that feels calm and polished—think plush beds, marble bathrooms, and big windows with dreamy views. It’s connected to the mall too, but once you step into the lobby, the hustle fades, and it feels like an urban retreat. Perfect for couples or anyone wanting a little pampering after a day of exploring (or shopping their heart out).
AC Hotel by Marriott Bloomington Mall of America
A few steps from the mall (literally across the street), this hotel has a minimalist vibe with crisp white bedding, thoughtful service, and a sleek lounge for cocktails or a relaxed breakfast. It’s also great for quick getaways—clean, efficient, and just stylish enough.
🎨 What to Do and Explore
Start your day at Minnehaha Falls
A true local favorite. This unexpected waterfall sits right in the middle of the city and feels like a little pocket of magic.
The falls are beautiful year-round, and the trails around the park are perfect for an easy hike.
Follow the path down the stone steps and keep walking. You’ll eventually meet the Mississippi River, which feels like time slow down. Bring coffee and take your time.
2. Stroll the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Next, head to this iconic outdoor art space near downtown. The Spoon Bridge and Cherry are a must-see, but the entire garden is full of surprises—giant sculptures, quiet corners, and that perfect mix of nature and creativity.
The Walker Art Center is next door if you’re in the mood for indoor art (and air conditioning).
3. Explore Downtown Minneapolis
You’ll find indie bookstores, cozy coffee shops, rooftop patios, and live music around almost every corner.
Pop into The Dayton’s Project for a beautifully restored department store-turned-creative-space, or just wander Nicollet Mall and watch the city buzz around you.
If you’re lucky, you might catch a street performer or a pop-up market.
4. Spend the day at the Mall of America
Yes, it’s massive.
Yes, it’s a mall. Yet, it delivers way more than window shopping.
There’s a full-blown indoor amusement park, roller coasters, the SEA LIFE Aquarium, mini golf, and a flood of food choices. It’s the ultimate all-weather playground.
Perfect if you’ve got kids in tow or want to wander and let your inner child run wild.
If you’re crashing at one of the connected hotels, it’s a breeze to duck out for a nap or swap outfits before dinner.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re sneaking away for a spontaneous weekend with your partner or flying solo with a playlist and a full tank of curiosity, Minneapolis delivers.
I didn’t expect to fall for this Midwest city. The artsy neighborhoods, crave-worthy eats, and lakes made me fall in love.
It’s a place that turns into “I’m moving here, or let’s go back again to Minneapolis.”
